May 21, 2013: Servers File Lawsuit Against Wolfgang Puck Catering, 'Vanity Fair' Entertains at Cannes, Are Food Festivals Finished?

1. ARE FOOD FESTIVALS FINISHED?: Bad weather forced promoters to cancel the third day of the Great GoogaMooga food festival in Brooklyn, leaving critics to ask whether the event has a future. New York magazine's Grubstreet blog criticizes the festival for long lines, food waste, and overall unoriginality: "You can't fault promoter Superfly for the weather, but news of the cancellation was made public only after hundreds of festivalgoers had turned out and were waiting to get in. Meanwhile, the majority of the hundred-odd vendors were suddenly left with the logistical issue of how to dispense with several thousand portions of everything from precooked lamb ribs to whiskey bread to egg and kale sandwiches." http://grb.st/18ceMH6

2. SERVERS FILE LAWSUIT AGAINST WOLFGANG PUCK CATERING: Current and former employees have filed a class-action lawsuit against Wolfgang Puck Catering and Events, claiming they are owed tips from private events as far back as 2008. The lawsuit says the company charged a 22 percent service fee but did not pass that along to bartenders and servers. New York Post: “Sticking clients with a 'service charge' and failing to pass along the fee to servers violates state and federal law." http://bit.ly/12GXpfe

3. 'VANITY FAIR' ENTERTAINS AT CANNES: The new French edition of the magazine hosted an A-list dinner with Chanel in Cannes Sunday. The Condé Nast title noted it needs to work on its brand recognition as it prepares for its inaugural issue next month. Women's Wear Daily: "'The U.S. edition of Vanity Fair is very present in Hollywood. Vanity Fair France must be present in Cannes,' Romatet told WWD. He noted that Graydon Carter, editor in chief of the U.S. edition of Vanity Fair, had agreed to forgo its annual party in Cannes, which this year would have marked a centenary celebration for the magazine." http://wwd.us/190YdPE
