May 29, 2013: Kanye's Alamo Stunt Flops, Art Basel Hits Hong Kong, Publishers Planning Events for Book Expo

1. KANYE'S GUERRILLA STUNT FLOPS: An attempt to screen Kayne West's new music video on the façade of the Alamo over the weekend fizzled before it started. The publicity stunt, which was to show off the rapper's video for "New Slaves," attracted hundreds of fans and protesters, as well as police officers who stated that no permit had been issued for the event at the historic site. 2. ART BASEL'S HONG KONG DEBUT: The first run of Art Basel in Hong Kong not only saw plenty of exhibitors, but also events, despite a tropical storm. WWD: "Not unlike the celebrity-stoked Art Basel Miami, the event began with a flurry of exhibition openings, private dinners, and late-night parties attracting the likes of Diesel’s Renzo Rosso and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich." http://wwd.us/10yGjRw

3. BOOK PARTIES LIVE ON: Who says print is dying? Publishers are still planning parties this week in connection to BookExpo America, which kicks off in New York today. The New York Post: "'We throw parties in Washington and Hollywood, why shouldn’t we throw one for publishing?' said People managing editor Larry Hackett, who will be hosting the bash at the Ink 48 Hotel tomorrow evening." http://bit.ly/19kLCal

4. EVENT PROS TO BATTLE IT OUT AT CONFERENCE: At the Executive Conference in Washington, D.C., August 6-8, the Society of Independent Show Organizers will preview its new competition, the SISO Event Innovation Battlefield. The concept, conceived by BizBash C.E.O. and founder David Adler and Reed Latin America president Marco Giberti, will pit three contestants against each other in 10-minute product pitches; a jury of event pros will then discuss the pitches before an audience vote. SISO plans to feature a full-blown version of the Event Innovation Battlefield at its 2014 Executive Conference in Atlantic City.

5. WHAT PENN STATION COULD LOOK LIKE: This morning, four architecture firms will show off their designs for the ideal Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. The plans from Diller Scofidio & Renfro, SHOP Architects, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture include green space, more spots for public gatherings, and room for other amenities like a spa or theater.
