ATLANTIC CITY’S REVEL CASINO TO CLOSE: Revel Casino Hotel, a $2.4 billion property that opened less than three years ago, will close in September after its owners filed for bankruptcy and failed to find a buyer for the property. The New York Times: “Revel succeeded in attracting a younger generation of visitors to its popular nightclub, called HQ, and beach club—people who were not necessarily coming to Atlantic City to play blackjack or feed the slot machines. But the enormous cost of the property, its vast size and its peculiar configuration—patrons had to ride a steep escalator from the lobby to get to the casino, the 57-story hotel and the restaurants—made it difficult to turn a profit.” http://nyti.ms/1yv7k5h
2. SPORTS TEAM BANS IPADS FROM STADIUM: Choosing security over potential social media interactions, Manchester United banned laptops, iPads, and other tablet devices at Old Trafford stadium. The soccer club says the ban is a safety issue and that it modeled the policy after airports that now prohibit uncharged devices from planes. Washable: “This isn't the first time tablets have been banned from stadiums. The New York Yankees, which won't even let users in with a commuter bag, banned iPads back in 2010. 3. NEW BALANCE PLANS UNUSUAL PRODUCT LAUNCH: New Balance is rolling out a new shoe with a live video that will be streamed to 50 specialty running stores. The brand is training the stores in how to host mini red carpet events centered on the video, which will show Q&A sessions with executives promoting the shoe. Adweek: “Most of the retailers participating have flatscreens and Internet access to stream the video broadcast. The red carpet parties will also include props and photographers to elevate the in-store experience.
