June 5, 2015: How Governors Ball Music Fest Has Survived, Career Advice From a Top Event Designer, Fox Promotes U.S. Open With Unorthodox Ad Campaign

1. HOW GOVERNORS BALL MUSIC FEST HAS SURVIVED: The founders of the Governors Ball Music Festival have weathered bad weather and venue changes to create an event that draws an eclectic and appealing lineup, as well as 40,000 fans a day. The New York Times: “Just by surviving this far, Governors Ball has beaten the odds. Led by big events like Coachella and Lollapalooza, dozens of festivals have sprouted around the country in the last decade or so, reaching seemingly every market. But the New York area has proved problematic for promoters, as one festival after another has struggled with weather, politics or the bottom line. Field Day, planned for Long Island in 2003, was moved at the 11th hour to Giants Stadium, where it was pummeled by rain and never returned. All Points West, billed as an East Coast version of Coachella, arrived in Jersey City in 2008 and lasted two years — a victim of more rain, and grumbling by fans over its accessibility to people coming from New York. More recently the Bamboozle, a long-running punk event in New Jersey, petered out after it featured Bon Jovi. Yet Governors Ball looks as if it is here to stay.” http://nyti.ms/1IhrpTz

2. CAREER ADVICE FROM A TOP EVENT DESIGNER: With a background in diplomacy and film, Bronson van Wyck of Van Wyck & Van Wyck in New York didn’t realize he was building the skills to become a top event designer. But now, with a client list any event pro would envy, he is in a position to share his take on how to thrive in the industry. The Coveteur: “I think of an event as experience and experiences are really, at their heart, stories that you live within. We always start with a story: how are people going to feel when they get there and how do we want to make them feel while they’re there? How do we want to change them and how do we want them to feel when they leave? That’s a narrative; it’s a journey. … If we’re working for a brand, there’s obviously always a story there around the brand. We try to bring that to life with the event and use the tools of hospitality. Events can be a really compelling and persuasive platform for communication.”

3. FOX PROMOTES U.S. OPEN WITH UNORTHODOX AD CAMPAIGN: Images of John F. Kennedy, Elvis Presley, and Tiger Woods are part of Fox’s unorthodox $15 million advertising blitz in advance of this month’s U.S. Open, which executives say is the biggest promotional push ever for the golf event. Advertising Age: [Robert Gottlieb, executive vice president of marketing for Fox Sports Media Group] said that while the Open promos are undeniably the product of the Fox ethos, the thrust of the marketing effort is to acknowledge the history and the tradition of the event. ‘When it was first announced that the U.S. Open would be in our hands, there was concern in some quarters as to what Fox was going to do with the franchise," he said. "I mean, it's as if people expect us to come onto the course blaring air horns.’ Of course, in outbidding legacy media partner NBC in a 12-year, $1.1 billion deal, Fox has earned the right to hype the Open as it sees fit. As Mr. Gottlieb noted, every aspect of the campaign is informed by the perceived sanctity of the event—only now the amps are all cranked up to 11.” http://bit.ly/1FxYR54
