Opening
to the public in November, the newly enclosed Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard will unify the Donald W.
Reynolds Center spaces shared by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the
National Portrait Gallery with a light-filled atrium.
Designed by renowned London architect Norman Foster (who designed the new Hearst building in New York), the $62 million project will feature an undulating glass roof and landscaping by Kathryn Gustafson, all highlighted by a water scrim. The 28,000-square-foot space will hold 900 guests for seated events or 1,200 for receptions, with room to spare for a stage or dance floor, and will be available for events beginning in January.
