Dear Call Sheet readers,

I'm excited to announce another speaker appearing at the Event Innovation Forum October 24: author and Wired senior editor Bill Wasik. He's also the creator of the first flash mobs and—for my money—one of the smartest guys writing about how our online and offline lives affect each other. (I loved his first book, And Then There's This: How Stories Live and Die in Viral Culture.)

Here's the blurb for the session:

The Connected Crowd: Physical Gatherings in a Digital Age
Today we often use the word "crowd" to describe groups of people in cyberspace (e.g., crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, and so on). But when electronic communication brings people together in real life, the physical crowd follows different patterns than online crowds do. Drawing on examples that include the London riots, Occupy Wall Street, the TED conferences, and his own experience with flash mobs, Bill Wasik will sketch out how digital media have changed the way we get together IRL today.

* INCOMING *

1. HURRICANE SEASON:
Tropical Storm Isaac, which weather experts expect to become a hurricane, is threatening the Republican National Convention set to begin in Tampa next week, which 50,000 people are expected to attend. Tampa Bay Times: "More than three months ago, Florida emergency management officials ran a drill on how to respond if a hurricane hit the convention. They tossed around hypothetical questions that now verge on becoming real. How strong would a storm have to be to force the convention to reschedule? What if it hit elsewhere in Florida, limiting available resources? And who would make the final call? … The decision to call off the convention rests with the Republican Party and the Secret Service, though any evacuations would be ordered by Hillsborough County and state emergency managers." http://bit.ly/SmLXRd

2. POLITICAL PARTYING: The Democratic National Convention in Charlotte is expected to be toned-down and attract fewer celebrities than in 2008. The Hill: "The nomination of the first African-American to lead a major political party into the fall campaign was a historic moment, and Obama at the time was a fresh political star. It’s natural that the convention to re-nominate him for another four years is a less exciting affair." Plus, "the economy also could be partly to blame, as organizations are reluctant to put on lavish events while people are out of work." http://bit.ly/MMe5Na

20 years later, New York City is still reaping the benefits of hosting the 1992 Democratic National Convention. In an effort to bring more hype to the city ahead of housing the convention, three events were created—Fashion Week, Restaurant Week, and Broadway on Broadway—which continue to be much-loved and money-generating events. 3. PARTNERSHIP HOME RUN: The 33-year-long Anheuser-Busch InBev and Major League Baseball partnership continues today after the brewer was named baseball's beer sponsor through 2018. AdWeek: "Shortly after the deal was announced, Budweiser carried out a virtual takeover of its MLB partner sites, running banners and skyscrapers declaring its pride in re-upping with MLB. Flanked by the Budweiser and MLB logos, the new ads read: 'America’s Pastime and America’s Beer. The Celebration Continues.'" http://bit.ly/Qr8NCv

4. MUSICAL BENEFITS
: How did Australian Hugh Evans organize the upcoming anti-poverty benefit concert for 60,000 people on the Great Lawn in Central Park? A background in philanthropy and a knack for social media helped. New York Times: "The production costs are being underwritten by grants from philanthropic institutions like the Sumner M. Redstone Charitable Foundation and the Pratt Foundation. The organizers’ approach stands in contrast to last year’s Black Eyed Peas charity concert in the park. That event raised $4.8 million for the Robin Hood Foundation through the sale of 6,000 high-priced V.I.P. tickets. The idea of using the concert to spur activism rather than raise money was a major selling point for the bands that signed on." http://nyti.ms/O4V4mT

5. CLEAN DESIGN: Woolite will open a pop-up boutique in New York during Fashion Week as part of its new campaign, “WooliteWashed. Clothes look like new, longer.” Women's Wear Daily: "The pop-up shop, which will be open until Sept. 16, will feature limited-edition garments and accessories, previously washed in Woolite, from five designers: Dannijo, Felix Rey, LNA, Laundry by Shelli Segal and Timo Weiland." The shop also will host several events including a Twitter party, book launch, and Fashion's Night Out event. http://wwd.us/REHw6U

6. COOL MOVES: YouGov BrandIndex's monthly Top 10 List of Improvers for July ranked heat-aiding cool drink brands like Diet Pepsi and A&W as the most improved in consumers' minds. AdWeek: http://bit.ly/NHYH1p
