The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz premiere after-party at the meatpacking district’s PM was emerald green and full of Muppets and children. Planned by the Walt Disney Company's vice president of marketing, synergy, and events, John Gong, sponsored by Pizza Hut, and hosted by the movie’s stars—Ashanti, Miss Piggy, and Kermit the Frog—the event celebrated the first Muppet movie since Disney acquired Jim Henson’s famous franchise in 2004.
Decorated by Tony Berger’s new firm, Relevent, PM’s ground-floor lounge got a new look, inspired by the film’s take on Emerald City, with lanterns, posters, and green lighting from AG Light & Sound. A scrim hung from the ceiling showed projections of The Muppet Movie, and Muppet musician Animal DJed (as well as a puppet can DJ, anyway). As guests entered the venue, they were greeted by waitstaff wearing tight, green Kermit T-shirts, and two servers dressed in authentic Pizza Hut delivery uniforms handed out mini pizzas from the fast food chain. The party’s signature cocktail—a blend of citrus vodka, melon liquor, and sour mix—was green (of course) and garnished with a gummy green frog. Kid-friendly passed hors d’oeuvres from Match Catering and Eventstyles included the so-called “Miss Piggy in a Blanket,” chicken fingers, assorted pinwheels, and cheese puffs.
Entertaining kids and adults alike, artist Sharon Pell was brought in to sketch Kermit and offer one of the renderings in a silent auction. The movie’s director, Kirk Thatcher, even joined in on the fun—helping Pell sketch one of Kermit’s eyes.
