Inside the Republican National Convention's Welcome Event

Mitra Sorrells
August 28, 2012

The Republican National Convention's welcome event for delegates and media went off as planned Sunday night at Tropicana Field, despite the fact that convention organizers had already announced plans to delay the start of the convention by one day due to tropical storm (now hurricane) Isaac.

Most likely due to the weather, the 20,000-strong crowd was smaller than the expected for the August 26 party, which was intended to showcase the Tampa Bay region to visiting delegates, media, and V.I.P.s. Event producer Corporate Magic used lighting, signage, and red-, white-, and blue-colored tension structures to create three distinct areas on the field, intended to symbolize the cities of Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Tampa. Here’s a look at some of the food, decor, and entertainment from the event.

Behind the main stage at Tropicana Field, a 40- by 60-foot American flag served as a patriotic backdrop for the performances.

The Tampa Bay Rays major league baseball team played inside Tropicana Field Saturday evening, giving organizers just 24 hours to transform the space before guests arrived for the welcome event on Sunday. Tension structures and lighting highlighted three distinct spaces intended to represent the region's three main cities: Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg. Entertainment took place on a main stage behind home plate, and at two smaller stages elevated 16 feet off the ground.

The 650 floral pieces were created by ConceptBAIT. There were nine different designs, each one incorporating citrus fruit, such as tangelos and navel oranges, embedded in a tropical arrangement inside a cigar box. For four days prior to the event the company's designers created the arrangements at a nearby hotel. Early Sunday morning the flowers were brought to Tropicana Field and sprayed with water every hour to keep them fresh until guests arrived in the evening.

Republican National Convention Highlights: 26 Ideas From Huffington Post, Facebook, CNN, and Others
Corporate Magic's vision for the Republican National Convention's welcome event calls for the main stage to be located behind home plate at Tropicana Field, with large white stars hanging above it. Two smaller stages will have 90-foot tension structures in red and blue suspended above them. Around the artificial turf field will be a mix of seating options for the 20,000 invited delegates and media, including lounge seating, high-top tables, and rounds.
