1. National Magazine Awards
These 42-year-old awards, also known as the Ellies, honor print and online magazine publishing’s best. The American Society of Magazine Editors, its executive director Marlene Kahan, and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism present the awards, which will be held May 1 at Jazz at Lincoln Center. More than 1,000 guests attended the 2007 ceremony, where New York magazine led with five wins.2. National Book Foundation’s National Book Awards
This prestigious award honors achievement in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people’s literature. The National Book Foundation started the event in 1950 and draws more than 1,000 submissions every year, with the awards handed out in November. Joan Didion and Terry Gross were honored with lifetime achievement awards at the 2007 ceremony, held at the Marriott Marquis.

3. Matrix Awards
New York Women in Communications presents these annual awards to female media leaders. Last year’s event was hosted by Rosie O’Donnell and honored Arianna Huffington, ­Meredith Vieira, and six others. The April 7, 2008, event will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria and sponsored by People magazine.

4. The Magazine Lifetime Achievement Awards
The American Society of Magazine Editors and the Magazine Publishers of America come together annually to honor the industry’s best at a luncheon at Gotham Hall. At this year’s event, held January 30, top honors went  to Jack Clinger, president and C.E.O. of Hachette Filipacchi U.S., and Tina Brown, former editor of The New Yorker and Vanity Fair.

5. Literacy Partners’ “Evening of Readings” Gala
Last year’s star-studded gala raised $1.2 million for the nonprofit literacy association supported by honorary chairwoman Liz Smith. The event drew more than 600 guests to Lincoln Center. The night featured readings by journalist Bob Woodruff and actress Vanessa Redgrave. The 2008 awards are planned for May 12.

6. Peabody Awards
The world’s oldest prize in electronic media, the Peabodys have honored top TV and radio programming since 1941. The event, administered by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism, draws more than 700 attendees. The 2008 awards are planned for June 16 at the Waldorf-Astoria.

7. PEN Literary Gala
On April 28, the PEN American Center will acknowledge an elite medley of international writers for their contributions to the literary canon. The American Museum of Natural History will host the black-tie cocktail and dinner event catered by Restaurant Associates and designed by Fleurisa. Lynn McCary Special Events will supervise the event.

8. The New Yorker Festival
The annual three-day celebration of arts and ideas will take place again in early October, with appearances by Salman Rushdie, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Steve Martin, among other literary talents. More than 20,000 festivalgoers can expect expanded programming, more book signings, and additional online coverage, as well as the traditional fiction-night and musical events. Rhonda Sherman, the magazine’s director of special events, will return with Overland Entertainment to produce this year’s event.

9. Overseas Press Club Awards
Every year, the Overseas Press Club award is given to the most inspiring journalists for their courageous and creative international reporting. In 2007, Katie Couric presented, with The Los Angeles Times winning the most awards. OPC executive director Sonya Fry will oversee planning this year, with 450 guests expected to attend the event at the Mandarin Oriental on April 24.

10. Financial Follies
The New York Financial Writers Association hosts this annual fund-raising dinner and variety show, taking jibes at reporters and raising money for journalism scholarships. The 2008 follies will be held at the Marriott Marquis on November 14. N.Y.F.W.A. executive manager Jane Reilly will produce the event, which is expected to bring in 1,300 reporters and Wall Street execs.
