Two-month-old Hal Burger is seemingly a fish out of water: a laid-back burger joint, it's surrounded by glitzy nightclubs in Adelaide Street-Duncan Street neighbourhood. But Hal's appearance is slightly deceiving. In addition to restaurant seating for up to 130, the two-story space has a private-function room that can hold 100 guests seated or 170 standing. The clean interior design fuses modern and classic with contemporary furniture contrasted with exposed brick. The menu contains unusual items like the burger chasseur, which includes grilled venison glazed with orange zest and cinnamon. The sweet potato fries are served with cumin guava ketchup. Hal also offers an extensive wine list and a cheese menu that includes Quebec Brie, Stilton, and aged Provolone. To secure the entire venue for an evening, you'll spend a minimum of $4,000 in rental costs and the bar and food tab.—Robyn Small
