10 New and Updated Toronto Hotels for Meetings and Events

Carla Warrilow
June 14, 2011
These new (and newly renovated) properties in Toronto have meeting rooms, conference facilities, ballrooms, and outdoor spaces that can accommodate groups small and large. So consider these hotels for events, meetings, seminars, and business entertaining.

1. Toronto welcomed its newest five-star hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, in February. The $300 million property has 53 storeys and 20,000 square feet of event space, including the largest ballroom in the city, clocking in at 7,400 square feet. The prefunction promenade has floor-to-ceiling windows that offer unobstructed views of the city.

2. Set to open later this year, Trump International Hotel and Tower will be the first Trump property in Canada and the second-tallest skyscraper in the city. The 70-storey building will feature 260 luxury hotel rooms, including a 4,000-square-foot Presidential Expo Suite complete with media room, boardroom, and lounge for meetings and gatherings. The five-star restaurant, 10,000-square-foot business centre, ballroom, and private dining area will offer views of Lake Ontario and the CN Tower.

3. One of the first boutique-style hotels to open in Toronto, the one-year-old Thompson Hotel has 102 guest rooms and 16 storeys. Its 30,000 square feet of event space include a 40-person screening room, modern corporate meeting space, two restaurants, and two lounges. The rooftop lounge offers a 360-degree view of the city through floor-to-ceiling glass, and outside, the infinity pool overlooks the CN Tower.

4. HĂ´tel Le Germaine Maple Leaf Square opened its second Toronto location last December just steps away from the Air Canada Centre. The boutique hotel has 4,600 square feet of event space; the Hall of Fame is the largest meeting room, at 1,020 square feet. Meeting rooms can accommodate 15 to 125 people, and apartments can also be booked for small, private gatherings.

5. One King West emerged from a $2 million renovation this spring with revamped event spaces, a luxurious lobby, and improved energy efficiency. The former home of the Dominion Bank, this heritage building kept its history intact with ornate coffered ceilings, wood-paneled rooms, and cathedral windows. Offering 14 event spaces—including a space for 80 inside the original bank vault—One King West can accommodate as many as 500 guests.

6. Toronto’s brand-new Holiday Inn boasts 23 floors with a total of 513 rooms. In line with the Holiday Inn’s rebranding efforts, the space underwent $20 million in renovations before opening in April with a sleek new facade and 9,000 square feet of meeting space. The largest room can seat 110, and the hotel’s restaurant, lounge, and patio are available for private events.

7. Completing its three-year, $15 million transformation last year, the Hilton Toronto Airport emerged with 23,000 square feet of refurbished event space. New wall coverings, light fixtures, and furnishings modernize the hotel’s meeting spaces, including conference rooms for 10 to 180 people and a 10,000-square-foot ballroom that can hold as many as 960. The Pearson International Airport is across the street.

8. The Bond Place Hotel received a $5.5 million modernization that updated its design and look this March. Renovating its 4,000 square feet of event space, the hotel is now business-friendly, with meeting rooms that come equipped with the latest technology. The 1,700-square-foot lounge is furnished with modern decor.

9. The Hyatt Regency Hotel opened in the winter of 2009 in the heart of downtown Toronto. The old building was completely renovated and now features 394 modern guest rooms and 25,000 square feet of updated meeting space, including two ballrooms, multiple meeting rooms, and an executive boardroom. Catering and special menu development are available, and dining options include King Street Social Kitchen and Mix Lounge on the main floor.

10. Surfacing from a $6 million makeover in the spring of 2009, the Marriott Bloor Yorkville offers renovated guest rooms and meeting spaces. With 12,000 square feet of event space, the hotel has two ballrooms, 13 meeting rooms outfitted with state-of-the-art technology, and a lengthy catering menu.
