December 4, 2015: Coldplay to Play Super Bowl Halftime Show, Pantone Chooses Two Colors of the Year, How to Entertain Guests Who Don't Drink

1. COLDPLAY TO PLAY SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW: The N.F.L. announced that Coldplay will headline the halftime show at Super Bowl 50 next year in Northern California. The Atlantic: “The truth is that the Super Bowl halftime show is America’s last great monocultural musical moment, and it’s mostly helpful as a thought experiment to help figure out which acts can legitimately be called superstars. … The band would do well to keep in mind that halftime shows are about visual spectacle, not music; if you want your performance to be anywhere approaching iconic in the cultural memory, you’ve got to offer up a Left Shark, or a middle finger, or a phallic guitar silhouette.” http://theatln.tc/1OCfXqO

2. SURPRISE! PANTONE CHOOSES TWO COLORS OF THE YEAR: Serenity, a light blue, and the Rose Quartz are the 2016 Pantone Colors of the Year. Advertising Age: “While Pantone works with hundreds of firms each year on a consulting and licensing basis, it's the Color of the Year that has really catapulted the company into the pop-culture spotlight and created a money-making business for brands. This year's colors, pastel shades, were chosen by Pantone's 20-person Color Institute for their calming effect in an age of technological overstimulation. As a plus, the hues also offer a gender blurring that could be ripped from the headlines of current events.” http://bit.ly/1Ireq5w

3. HOW TO ENTERTAIN GUESTS WHO DON'T DRINK: Not everyone will want to imbibe speciality cocktails or craft beer at events. Thoughtful event planners will concoct a nonalcoholic beverage menu that goes beyond club soda with a twist. New York’s The Cut blog: “It must be said that the non-drinker does not aspire to drink a rum-free piña colada like it is his tenth birthday at the Rainforest Cafe. Nor does he wish to toast with sparkling Martinelli’s like a child play-shaving his face beside a group of Champagne-drinking dads. In the briefest terms, a good non-alcoholic party drink should not seem to be missing a key ingredient (alcohol), nor should it seem like a mere ingredient itself. While any drink is fine on an ordinary day, the booze-free party drink should be able to stand alone as a great drink in its own right.” http://thecut.io/1IFgzoZ
