Washington may be officially in its warm-weather slumber, but last Thursday Capitol File and the Washington Ballet had no problem filling the L2 Lounge in Georgetown to its 250-person capacity for a summer party toasting the "Original Bacardi Mojito," according to the invite. By the fete's 7 p.m. start, a line had already formed in front of the members-only club. The diverse crowd ran the gamut from the twentysomething members of the ballet's Jeté Society to the more established group from the women's committee.
The venue was a major draw. "We knew a lot of the folks that were coming had yet to see L2," said Jayne Sandman, the magazine's associate publisher and the evening's planner. "We wanted to show people a good time during the summer and thank them for their patronage."The event also marked an early start to the ballet season, which begins in October. Projections of the new season's ad campaign dotted the raw brick-walled space, which offered a glowing bar at each end. Side rooms also included lime-green upholstered and white leather cube seats, matching the white cubed coffee tables laden with Capitol File magazines and Bacardi recipe flip-books. The lounge provided passed hors d'oeuvres, including tomato and goat cheese on almond oregano biscuits and tangerine slices on endive.
Bartenders got a workout by making made-to-order Bacardi mojitos for each guest (after instruction from a Bacardi representative) until the party wound down at 11 p.m., at which time each guest took home their own green cocktail muddler as a souvenir.
