As New Yorkers still struggle to deal with the attacks of September 11, another date is approaching: October 31. That leaves event planners who had Halloween events on their calendars wondering if such death-themed events are appropriate in a city that is still holding memorial services for those lost in the attacks. "I've been trying to figure out whether I'm going to have my party or not," Paul Samuels, director of the Legal Action Center, a nonprofit that usually holds a Halloween party, recently told The New York Times. But after flying home to New York from a conference in St. Louis and seeing the World Trade Center site, he decided that guests needed a fun party.
The Village Halloween Parade, now in its 28th year, will also go on, although without its usual dancing skeleton puppets. And parade artistic director Jeanne Fleming has asked Mayor Rudy Giuliani to be the parade's first-ever grand marshal. "This is the antithesis of everything the terrorists stand for," she told the Times. "It's about creativity, love, tolerance."
