TEAMBUILDING: Corporate Combat

Sure, fencing might not be the best way to approach conflict resolution, but employees stand to sharpen more than just swords with this tactic-heavy sport. The ability to read one’s opponent and execute quick-paced maneuvers are key to this medieval art—just as, ahem, they are to corporate culture—and are crucial components of veteran fencer and fight choreographer Andrew Villaverde’s class at the Malibu Fencing Club. Taking on corporate groups of as many as 20 people, Villaverde exposes students to the basics behind foil, epee, and saber fencing styles, as well as a brief history of weapons, before letting them compete against one another. The experience culminates in an intra-corporation tournament, or an exhibition of employees’ fiercest moves for those who aren’t ready to cross swords with the boss. Sessions range from a single three-hour course to a six- to eight-week series. —Rosalba Curiel
