Wee Wealthy Party for Sloan-Kettering

March 19, 2002
You've got to start them young. Nevermind the twentysomethings and thirtysomethings at the Young Fellows of the Frick Collection's annual gala. The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering cultivates its donors young--as in teething and training pants young. So the nonprofit's 11th annual Bunny Hop benefit transformed FAO Schwarz into a kiddie-wonderland, with finger food, entertainment and costumed characters for the kids, and hors d'oeuvres and booze for the moms and dads.
DeJuan Stroud decorated the front of the toy mecca with a lovely trellis made in the shape of a bunny head and wrapped with vines and flowers, with Easter baskets and other decorations placed around it. Inside the store, Stroud put pastel-colored flower arrangements with roses, anemones, daffodils and peonies in Easter baskets at the beverage tables, and potted daffodils and tulips on buffet tables.

Caterer Party Box decked out food tables with an array of fun Easter Bunny-themed decor, including faux plastic grass and Easter eggs scattered around a white picket-fence display decorating dessert tables laden with brownies, cookies and chocolates. Other kiddie food options included a hot dog cart, a popcorn cart and peanut butter and jelly brioche. For the grown-ups, Party Box served hors d'oeuvres like filet on crostini and chicken satay. Party Box glued pastel-colored M&M's to the serving trays to create a fun mosaic, and each tray had a plush velvet bunny placed on top. (See the food trays from this event)

The event made sure to keep the young guests busy with a variety of entertainment options. Party Box provided a cookie decorating station and another table where kids could create candy necklaces with licorice ropes, Life Savers and pretzels. Face painters from Kevin Kruger's Party Kidz painted baby chicks, flowers and other designs on kids' faces. Entertainer Magic Al Garber kept a crowd of kids giggling while he performed magic tricks and told jokes. A group of dancers and a DJ from Mikey Mike Entertainment played party music and got a bunch of kids--and an actress dressed as Barbie--dancing with them. More costumed characters, including Pikachu; Snoopy (who was so worn out from hugging that we saw him gesture for a 10-minute break); Raggedy Ann and Andy; Alice, who somehow wandered out of Wonderland; and Shrek rotated the hugging, pats-on-the-head and photo op duties throughout the store.

'Our leadership and board worked very, very hard to get us across the finish line, and it was a beautiful moment.”
