Not everyone can be a ballet dancer, but at Monday's New York City Ballet benefit at the New York State Theater, you could at least dance with one. The Dance With the Dancers event offered hundreds of young ballet supporters a chance to dance with the pros and dine in a chic 1920's Stork Club-themed party entitled Jazzin' at the Swank Club.
Decor by Color of Magic for the dining area included tall glass vases filled with water, and tall, fluffy white feathers and white calla lilies splayed from the vase. Some tables were decorated with small table lamps, and shimmery silver table linens completed the look. A small lounge area off to the side featured white wicker furniture surrounded by lots of potted plants and flower arrangements. As part of the theme, students from the School of American Ballet dressed as cigarette girls strolled through the crowd during the cocktail hour giving away cigarette-box shaped candy favors and candy cigars to guests who purchased raffle tickets from them. Raffle prizes included jewels from event sponsor Paul Morelli, passes to the Blue Note and an Escada evening bag.
After dinner, the NYCB dancers gave a special jazz ballet performance to "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." Afterwards, dance music was provided by Qool DJ Marv of Qool Music and Entertainment and a band that included musicians Roy Hargrove, Kelvin Sholar, Lenny White, and vocalist Amel Larrieux (who performed at a recent LifeBeat benefit).
