Thirty-five of the city's most splendid canines showed up polished, poufed and ready to celebrate. They were joined by 175 human guests and one parrot for the Humane Society of New York's Doggie Dinner benefit at the New York Carriage House.
Modeled after the first Doggie Dinner hosted by Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1904, the event offered three "courses" of chow for the canine guests. The dogs gobbled bone-shaped oatmeal raisin dog biscuits dipped in carob from Match Catering and Eventstyles, which served the doggie hors d'oeuvres on silver trays decorated with chew toys. Large bowls of water and Eukanuba dog kibble for the pooches were laid out near the entrance, and bone-shaped doggie breath mints in a small silver bowl were available at the bar next to a dog dish filled with Chex mix for humans. (Match's people food also included mini quiches and spring rolls.)
In honor of the late fashion designer Bill Blass—an animal lover whose dog Barnaby served as the canine event chair—models attired in vintage dresses from his collections paraded down an Astroturf runway with a few of the dogs available for adoption through the Human Society. Blondie, a fluffy Pomeranian, elicited the most "Oh, how cute!" exclamations from the crowd—perhaps she can look forward to life in the lap of society luxury like the rest of the canine guests.
