Sexy summertime fun was the theme at Self and VH1's party to launch "Rock Bodies," a dual-pronged promotion that features the hottest bodies in rock n' roll on the pages of the Self's September issue and on VH1's "All Access: Rock Bodies" broadcast.
Event producer Frederick Anderson of Anderson Hannant created a white color theme for the raw space Eyebeam Atelier, with oversized white couches, potted palms, huge inflated beach balls and video screens. "We were inspired by the fact that we had Sheryl Crow singing her big summertime song," Anderson told us. (That would be Crow's "Soak Up the Sun.") "Originally, one of the ideas we had was to do it outside, but we nixed that when the summer got so hot. But our inspiration was a summer party. We wanted to bring the feel of a loungey beach party indoors." Colorful lighting highlighted the main attraction: The stage where Crow—the rock body who graces the cover of Self—performed.
In the entry room, a bazaar of beauty was on display. Lei-draped models from Liz Claiborne stood in front of tropical-looking "scent tents" and handed out mini paper umbrellas doused with the designer's new Bora Bora fragrance, while more models showed off clothing. Guests received manicures and makeovers at a circular beauty bar stocked with products from Sally Hansen and Neutrogena, and hair stylists from Paul Mitchell gave blow-outs at another station. Cars from event sponsor Chevrolet—Monte Carlos and Corvettes—also dotted the space.
In keeping with the color theme, Match Catering and Eventstyles served food from custom-made white trays and used rock candy, tropical leaves and bright purple and green orchids to decorate the offerings. Passed hors d'oeuvres included items Match calls "conewiches"—tarragon chicken salad served in sesame cones. Other nibblies included lobster hash on corn and potato pancakes, bite-sized burgers with chipotle ketchup, shoestring fries drizzled with saffron aioli or ketchup, and grilled tuna and steamed bok choy drizzled with wasabi.
For a post-concert treat, mini sorbet cones in mango, lemon and .phpberry were passed around. And "summer-tinis" made with watermelon puree, vodka and Chambord, garnished with a watermelon wedge, gave the tired cosmopolitan new life.
Among the bodies brought in by Lizzie Grubman Public Relations to celebrate were Ice-T, Heather Matarazzo, Rachel Hunter and Survivor's Ethan Zohn.
