With promotional slogans like "The Sun Made Tangible" and "The Sun on Earth," the Gold Virtuosi 2 International Jewelry Design awards at the Hammerstein Ballroom had an obvious decor theme. But luckily Dan Fehlig of The Upper Crust created a look that emulated the warmth of the sun without actual heat—it was thankfully cool inside the ballroom while it was sweltering outside.
The event attracted hundreds of members of the international jewelry industry for a dinner, jewelry fashion show and awards ceremony that honored the 34 winners of a gold jewerly design competition. Sponsored by the World Gold Council, the Italian Trade Commission and Vicenza Trade Fair and produced by the Italian Jewelry Guild, the event was held to showcase up-and-coming jewelry designers and promote the gold industry.
Fehlig decorated the entrance of the ballroom with a giant weather balloon that was suspended in front of a opaque white screen, and the Virtuosi 2 logo was projected onto the balloon amidst a flood of gold lights from Stortz Lighting. Metallic glitter was scattered on the black carpet to the balcony where cocktails were held, and gobo-textured gold lighting flooded the bar area.
Dinner table centerpieces also matched the golden sun theme, with lovely, globe-shaped votive candelabra centerpieces surrounding flower arrangements from Douglas Koch Visuals. And of course the gold theme had to carry over into food: The four-course dinner catered by The Upper Crust featured gold-painted gianduja cakes topped with ganache and almonds for dessert.
