Lanterns in all shapes and sizes popped up at Diffa’s Dining by Design event, and not all of them hung predictably from the ceiling. Here’s a look at how designers incorporated the decorative light sources into their creations.

Soolip and Floracopia's designers fashioned paper lanterns to look like mini hot air balloons, suspending small baskets beneath them for a playful touch.

Instead of suspending lanterns over the table, where they would have competed for attention with a large driftwood horse centerpiece, Paige and Coleman's designers placed two large lanterns on the outer corners of a rug.

Fine and Faucet's designers strung tall and round bronze-hued lanterns over their table, casting a tranquil glow that was in keeping with the Zen-like look of the design, which included a number of Buddha statues.
