MarthaWatch: Clash of the Catering Chefs

Last week’s installment of our current television obsession turned out to be a battle between the show’s two trained cooks. When Martha Stewart assigned her Apprentice candidates to create and sell a new salad dressing—while she tossed her own homegrown greens, of course—chefs Bethenny and Marcela got some precious airtime, and both came out looking better than they had in past episodes. Although Bethenny, who cooks for a food delivery service here in New York, should probably be our hometown favorite, we have to admit to a soft spot for Marcela, who runs a catering company and teaches cooking classes in Tijuana, Mexico. She was pretty good at working her bilingual skills while selling the product, but our interest probably stems from the vicarious thrill of watching her nervousness before Martha tasted her dressing. (Some of you have probably done it, but we can’t imagine cooking for Martha.) We still haven’t heard much from event planner Sarah, although she did get in a few good digs on Jim, the show’s clear villain, which was enjoyable. The fun continues tonight at 9 PM.
