Nationals Park Counts Down to Opening, Rakes in Events

Nationals Park opens for business in 18 days, but it's already looking to 2009 for private events at the stadium. "The phone has been ringing off the hook," says Heather Westrom, director of ballpark enterprises. "It's great, but I'm just waiting to be able to show what we can offer. It's so much more enticing to show people a finished space so they can envision their event."

So far some 50 events are already in the works, with most patrons requesting the PNC Diamond Club, which holds 400 for seated events and includes a patio overlooking home plate. The space is appropriately decorated with baseball ephemera, including items referencing the 1924 World Series (in which the Washington Senators beat the New York Giants in seven games).Centerplate, the Connecticut-based catering company that handles food for FedEx Field and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, has been named as the venue's exclusive caterer. The stadium is also working with local restaurants such as Ben’s Chili Bowl, Red Hot & Blue, and La Piccola Gelateria to bring some familiar Washington favorites.
