1. FOOD TRENDS: Who's ready for some pig tails followed by artisanal soft-serve? Here are 10 food trends for 2013. New York Times: "There are tastes for all persuasions, and enough strong runners-up to fill the menu of a Brooklyn pop-up: pine needles, pimentĂłn, horseradish, seaweed, uni, poutine, American cheese, Spanish ham, whey, ashes and fish milt (translation: sperm)." http://nyti.ms/WcpapG
BizBash asked caterers and chefs to predict food trends and popular ingredients we'll see at events in the year ahead: http://bit.ly/VDOuFJ
2. INAUGURATION DRESS: Retailer White House Black Market launched an inaugural-inspired dress collection in its Washington-area stores. Women's Wear Daily: "The chain is also a sponsor of the Washingtonian Starry Night Inaugural Ball, which will be held January 20 at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The party is a first for the Washington magazine, but revelers already have a lot of ground to cover with 17 state society balls, 18 unofficial balls, and the yet-to-be-announced official balls, which totaled 10 in 2009." http://wwd.us/Ze5DvO
What will First Lady Michelle Obama wear to the inaugural ball? The Boston Globe lists the contenders: http://bo.st/Txjr0N
3. THIS COUPON SELF-DESTRUCTS: Frozen yogurt chain 16 Handles is using the trending social media platform Snapchat to give customers a coupon they must use within 10 seconds at stores. The promotion may be the first to use the platform, on which Facebook modeled its new Poke. Mashable: "Coupon-based promotions could be a new frontier for marketers. It's too soon, however, to tell how this program worked. If it can drum up business for a frozen yogurt chain the middle of winter, though, other marketers will take notice." http://on.mash.to/UnrUCG
4. COST OF ANTI-IMMIGRATION LAW: Arizona's anti-immigration law has cost the state by discouraging tourism and prompting boycotts from meetings and conventions. Huffington Post: "Bookings at the Phoenix Convention Center are estimated to have plunged by one-third since 2009, costing $132 million in the most recent year alone. Meanwhile, bookings at similar convention centers in other states have stayed flat or risen." http://huff.to/W3pkiK
