1. MARKETING GENIUS: When the lights went out at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, on-the-ball marketers used the moment to create brand-appropriate responses on Twitter. Tide tweeted: “We can’t get your #blackout, but we can get your stains out,” and posted one of its ads. Forbes: “This is an example of the new world of marketing where things happen so fast, where brands respond real time to the environment,” said Tim Calkins, a marketing professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. http://onforb.es/11jkgQJ

2. VANITY FAIR'S OSCAR PARTY: From knocking down a wall at Mortons to build a 7,500-square-foot temporary nightclub to the crazy things guests have done to sneak in (camping out overnight beneath the tent's metal scaffolding in formalwear), the magazine offers a history of one of the industry's most noted parties. New for this year's party: "On one of the Sunset Tower’s walls, a faux bay window will be created. The 'windowpanes' will consist of video screens carrying live feeds of Oscar winners and other guests arriving on the party’s 'red carpet.' (It will be green and white stripes this year.) Cameras will shoot the guests from behind so that the view from the window will be of dozens of photographers and camera crews recording each arrival." http://vnty.fr/W5bDmG

3. GROUNDHOG DAY: What actually happens on the holiday? Fireworks, shuttle buses, and a famous rodent named Punxsutawney Phil are involved in the annual celebration in a small Pennsylvania town. Reuters has more details on the 127-year-old tradition, which took place Saturday: http://trib.in/XxdrnO
