1. ACADEMY REBRANDS: Oscar is getting sensitive about his age. Producers have dropped the name "85th Academy Awards," despite the milestone anniversary, and are only referring to the show as "The Oscars" in all promotional materials. The Wrap: "We're rebranding it," Oscar show co-producer Neil Meron said. "We're not calling it 'the 85th annual Academy Awards,' which keeps it mired somewhat in a musty way. It's called 'The Oscars.'" http://bit.ly/W7K53M
2. INDIE CRED: There's another award show happening this weekend: the Film Independent Spirit Awards. The Saturday afternoon affair will be hosted by former Saturday Night Live actor Andy Samberg. He joked about the more laid-back atmosphere of the event. “I guarantee that you will hear the clank and clack of silverware on plates as everyone gets a full meal during the show. I’m hoping they keep those audience mics wide open so we can hear the light laughter mixed with the cutting of steaks and maybe some sort of polenta. We’ll have to wait and see. That’s another one of the big surprises—the unveiling of the menu.” http://bit.ly/XpsceW
3. MORE MONEY: Who wouldn't want to increase revenues from live sports and music events? You would be surprised how many sports teams and venues leave money on the table. Here are tips to turn that around, including promoting deeper fan engagement. Huffington Post: "That means several things—better venues, premium services, special events, special access (to the players, to the coaches, to the artists and entertainers), and continuous online marketing of these." http://huff.to/138Lyc1
