June 21, 2013: Instagram Adds Video, Mobile Guides to Replace Audio at Museums, 3-D Broadcasting Gets Bad News

1. INSTAGRAM ADDS VIDEO: To compete against Vine, Instagram is adding video capabilities, owner Facebook announced Thursday. The new service will allow for 15-second videos—compared to 6 seconds on Vine—and add filters and editing features. The move could mean big changes for how brands connect with consumers. Women's Wear Daily: "If Instagram has a platform where users can produce videos that have the same aspirational look and feel as still photographs for consumers, this means a lot of additional content from brands could be coming. For retailers and designers, it could be an even more profound medium for brand evangelists to engage with their followers." http://wwd.us/182DdJQ

2. MOBILE GUIDES TO REPLACE AUDIO AT MUSEUMS: New York Times: "Bloomberg Philanthropies on Thursday announced that five cultural institutions will share in a new $15 million commitment to provide support for mobile technology. The institutions—the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Botanical Garden, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum—will replace their traditional audio guides with more advanced mobile guides that use technologies like GPS and 3-D imaging." http://nyti.ms/12fl5nm

3. 3-D BROADCASTING GETS BAD NEWS: ESPN's decision to shut down its 3-D sports channel is having an effect across sports broadcasting, with soccer governing body FIFA saying it may drop 3-D broadcasting plans for next year's World Cup. Hollywood Reporter: "If FIFA abandon 3-D, it could prove a fatal blow for the technology, at least for the short term, on TV. The single most-watched sporting event worldwide, the World Cup is a proven driver of TV tech. FIFA's decision to broadcast the 2006 World Cup in high definition is widely credited for boosting sales of HD sets globally." http://bit.ly/14mHKBt
