How's this for a paradox: To launch Restaurant Day--the annual event when New York restaurants offer mini portions outside their restaurants for mini prices--the organizers held a press event at Grand Central Terminal with a 12-foot, 4,800-pound slice of cheesecake. Tiny portions, giant cheesecake? You figure it out.
We just enjoyed the free (normal-size) cheesecake samples from Baby Watson, a division of Mother's Kitchen that made the big display, which we thought was plastic until we got really close to look at it. The slice was placed in Grand Central's southwest balcony, and a raised platform from Overland Entertainment Co. helped photographers get overhead shots of the cake with the famous main room of the terminal in the background.
Organized by New York's convention and visitor's bureau, NYC & Company, on the Friday before Restaurant Week (the week of $20 prix fixe lunches), the event also included an appearance by the CVB's president and CEO, Cristyne Lategano-Nicholas. This year more than 160 New York restaurants participated in the event, which benefits Citymeals-on-Wheels and Share Our Strength, two hunger relief organizations.

A 12-foot slice of cheesecake baked by Baby Watson, a division of Mother’s Kitchen, was displayed at Grand Central Terminal for the launch of New York’s annual Restaurant Day.

A raised platform from Overland Entertainment helped photographers get overhead shots with a dramatic view of Grand Central Terminal behind the giant slice of cheesecake.

Representatives from Mother’s Kitchen passed out smaller slices of cheesecake from a booth at the Restaurant Day press event.

The cheesecake slice’s table also included boxes from Baby Watson, a division of Mother’s Kitchen, and a faux nutritional guidelines label with some startling statistics: 19,200 4-ounce servings, 6 million calories, and 427,008 grams of fat.
