Orlando FunShop Sizzles In Tropical Style, Part 2

Event professionals enjoyed elaborate food, fun decorations, and a spicy hint of salsa.

February 15, 2006

Mark Wells, creative director for Hello Florida, spoke about maximizing ideas and working with vendors in his seminar "The Spectrum of Success." Matthew D. Gonzalez, president of G Solutions, addressed the importance of thorough production values.

Around 6 PM, guests were led via conga line into the Event Style Reception. The room was decorated with hundreds of drums, which served as highboy cocktail tables and which surrounded yellow, green, and pink electric palm trees. The drums also adorned a small stage and lined Wizard's lit dance floor. Bobby Ramirez, RitmoPalooza's owner and leader, also used the drums in his performance, which was enhanced by a barrage of moving lights from Theatrical Lighting Connection.

Cort Event Furnishing provided the contemporary asymmetrical sofas, overstuffed white sectionals, and brushed steel-and-glass accent tables used in the lounges. At elaborate food stations, guests created their own paella feast by adding chorizo, chicken, and seafood to Spanish rice and pairing it with sangria. Another station offered a whole 15-pound crispy snapper served with spicy tomato pique and paired with citrus mojito shooters. Crispy lechon (Caribbean roasted pork) was served with Cuban bread and chimichurri sauce and paired with fresh-berry mojito shooters. A salad bar offered plantain, three-bean, yucca, and tomato-cucumber salads. Specialty drinks, wine, and beer were served at illuminated bars and tiki huts. Latin dessert specialties such as caramel flan, tres leches, warm tembleque (coconut cake), and brazo Gitano were served from a round station. A sugar sculpture of tropical fish in bright Caribbean colors, created by the hotel's pastry chef, Laurent Branlard, decorated the dessert bar. Subtle touches-acrylic boxes filled with floating orchids and votives on cocktail tables, maracas scattered about the room for guests to play, and a box of handmade chocolates as a parting gift-topped off the experience.
