10 Best Ideas of the Week: Real-Time Traffic Projections at the Lowline Gala, Atelier Azza's Jeweled Cake, a Mad Hatter-Inspired Tent

Melissa Schorsch
September 21, 2012

Here’s a look at 10 steal-worthy ideas we spotted this week, including the real-time motion projections exhibit at the Lowline's "Anti-Gala" in New York, Atelier Azza's jeweled cake in Chicago, a forestlike entrance wall at the New Yorkers for Children fall benefit, and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-inspired tents at the Green Tie Ball in Chicago.

New Yorkers for Children Fall Gala
New Yorkers for Children Fall Gala
This year’s New Yorkers for Children fall gala had a “light the way” theme, inspired by the nonprofit’s mission to improve the lives of young people. David Stark handled the decor inside Cipriani 42nd Street for the Tuesday-night event, embellishing a photo backdrop of a forest scene with white birch trees, lush greenery, and a “path” lit by lanterns.

Atelier Azza Birthday Celebration
On September 10, Chicago lifestyle publication Glossed & Founded hosted a one-year anniversary event for Atelier Azza. Held at the Public Hotel, the event had a glitzy, birthday party vibe, replete with a towering cake from Sugar Hills Bakery. The cake’s frosting had the silky look of fabrics from the Atelier Azza collection, while jewels and other embellishments evoked the line’s gilded, ornate look.

Presented in partnership with Thrillist, MasterCard’s “Rock Your Palate” dinner series is designed to showcase food, music, and art. Held at Chicago’s Floating World Gallery, the first event on September 13 included a dinner prepared by big-name local chefs Sarah Grueneberg and Giuseppe Tentori. While guests had the dessert—Tentori’s cherry pie with cherry cream, almond sherbet, and wine-soaked cherries—DJ Ian Edgar spun the classic-rock hit “Cherry Pie” by Warrant.

Chicago's Green Tie Ball on September 15 had an Alice in Wonderland-inspired design by Kehoe Designs, which featured three tented areas. The V.I.P. tent, dubbed the "Mad Hatter's Tent," featured rustic, organic decor complemented by timepiece gobos.

At the Lowline "Anti-Gala" in New York, an eye-catching "Experiments in Motion" exhibit—produced by a partnership between Audi of America and the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture—stood at the event entrance. The installation, projected on the floor, showed the constant movement in Manhattan, which was updated in real time with the current traffic patterns. Mirroring the projections on the ceiling was a 45-foot-long steel model of the Manhattan subway grid that showcased maps never before viewed by the public.
