Smart Ideas From Golden Globes Gift Suites

It’s hardly newsworthy when celebrities get their photos taken with freebies at swag lounges, but these cool marketing and design ideas kept the gifting fresh and focused.

January 16, 2007
Dainty Director’s Chairs
In Style’s setup at the Four Seasons gets our vote for the most sophisticated and civilized of the suites around town. (It was three days long, instead of the typical two, which probably helped to diffuse the crowds.) Our favorite touch? The pampering area, a 20- by 30-foot tent covered in billowy white fabric, which offered guests such as Heidi Klum and Felicity Huffman makeup touchups and blowouts while they sat in tall director’s chairs emblazoned with the magazine’s logo on the back (all the better for photographers to capture the host’s name). Caravents produced the affair, working with R. Jack Balthazar for flowers (bursts of white roses paired with striking green cymbidium orchids in natural wood containers) and Lounge 22 for rentals. “The idea was to bring a luxurious, residential aesthetic,” said Caravents founder Cara Kleinhaut. “It was a testament to the design team that celebrities and guests not only stopped by the suites but actually stayed, lounged, and enjoyed the setting.” Full Picture handled PR.

Sublime Swag
Silver Spoon Hollywood Buffet founders Melissa Lemer and Lorena Bendinskas decided on an “Asian Invasion” theme for their pre-Globes swagfest, but the predictable floating lily pads were verboten for the pool behind the private Beverly Hills home they commandeered for the occasion. In fact, floating anything evoked too much of a been-there, done-that feeling for savvy event designer Justin Howard of Flaming Flower Productions. Instead, he created “a tranquil Asian place” by attaching bamboo poles to heavy tent bases at the bottom of the pool and topping them with clusters of white dendrobiums. Poolside Buddhas and tall wooden containers holding horsetails completed the Zen picture. During award season, even the weather in sunny Southern California can be iffy, so cautious event planners often have tents on hand for outdoor events. Nighttime tents can be dressed up with lights, but tents pitched during the day are more of an aesthetic challenge. Howard used 90 white Chinese parasols to spiff up the ceiling of the clear tent over the Silver Spoon event. He tucked the parasols at different angles into an overhead web he created by attaching crisscrossing nylon strands to the sides of the tent. The fanciful ceilingscape was thrifty enough to stay within budget—important because the event benefited RxArt, which promotes healing through exposure to art.

Haute Pharmacy
One of the vendors was not like the others at Access Hollywood’s lounge at the newly remodeled Sofitel. CVS/Pharmacy (which is converting 300 Sav-On stores in the area to its nameplate) had a big presence among the many fashion and jewelry brands at suites around town. Jes Gordon designed a clean, modern-looking booth with a mirrored wall where CVS sponsored blowouts and manicures. FormDecor supplied the furniture rentals. And CVS made a $100,000 contribution on behalf of the celebs in attendance to nonprofits Best Buddies and Lollipop Theater Network. On 3 produced the event.

Design Details
At least two design details at Kari Feinstein PR’s Style Lounge in a private manse off Benedict Canyon caught our eye. First off, at the entrance table where staffers were taking donations for the event’s named charity (the Environmental Media Association), a spray of pretty peacock feathers added decoration and levity to a spherical flower arrangement by Flair Event & Floral. And we loved the furniture designs by Fresh Wata in the home’s main room—a cluster of red sofas and white and red pillows printed with a vaguely floral pattern—and down by the pool.

Fun Food and Files
The former Vivian Vance home, now known as the Cooley Estate for current owner and Abbey founder David Cooley, had dozens of vendors distributing their wares around the pool. 95 Degrees & Sunny gave out never-dulling glass nail files emblazoned with “Golden Globe Awards.” We checked with 95 Degrees, and they can customize the files with any name—perfect for a gift at a beauty launch, we thought. We also enjoyed chatting with cheese expert the Cheese Impresario, and Sushi Girl, who hand-rolls sushi at events and also teaches sushi-making techniques for small groups. Showtime Networks worked with gifting company Friends in High Places to put together the two-day event, and Classic Party Rentals was among the presenting sponsors. Make-a-Wish benefited from a charity tie-in.

Chaise for a Cause
Swag suites are generally a you-gift-my-back, I-gift-yours proposition, with companies benefiting from the association with celebs who use their free products. But shrewd event planners take advantage of all those stars swarming around the free booty and generate goodwill by inviting celebs to lend their names to a good cause. Backstage Creations came up with an unusual twist on the charity angle this year: The gifting company asked celebrities to autograph Modern Studio Furnishings Design’s one-of-a-kind rectangular chaise covered in caramel-colored suede, which doubled as seating at the gifting retreat at the Beverly Hilton Hotel before the 64th annual Globes. The chaise was to be auctioned off to benefit the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation.
