"Eat hamburger. Wear leather. Love fur." That was the message at yesterday's Beautifully Canadian show, where the finale included a pro-fur protest with a model wearing nothing but a necklace and a white mink coat (designed by Zuki) accompanied by demonstrators picketing the runway with signs reading "She'd rather go naked in fur" and chanting "Hell, yes, we love fur."
The Fur Council of Canada presented the sparsely attended show (half of the runway seats remained empty for the 5 p.m. collection featuring designs from Paula Lishman, Theo, and Jean Crisan), which poked fun at PETA's highly recognizable anti-fur campaigns. (Supermodels including Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell have posed naked on billboards with the slogan "I'd rather go naked than wear fur.")A police officer stood at the entrance to the runway room, which, until this show, had been manned only by F.D.C.C. security guards. There were no gift bags, but a full-page ad from yesterday's National Post—promoting fur as a responsible fashion choice—was placed on seats throughout the runway room alongside a media kit with a furry red hair clip inside.
