We were shocked—shocked!—when what seemed at first glance to be a racist invitation crossed our desk. The invitation was for a benefit fashion show, preceded by a kick-off cocktail party billed as an “all-white V.I.P. reception and party (invitation only).” We assumed the event’s promoters intended to request that guests dress in all-white clothing—and not that they wanted to limit the RSVP’s to white guests—but we think a little clarity of language could have prevented any confusion.
When we called one of the event’s organizers, she was aghast that the wording could be interpreted that way—and claimed she had received no concerned phone calls other than ours. Are we overly sensitive or something?
