Art Above the Couch

A party to launch the new book The Art of Buying Art combined homey touches with art-world cool.

June 21, 2007
Mixed Greens founder Paige West built a Chelsea art gallery around the concept that buying contemporary art doesn't have to be intimidating. So to celebrate the launch of her new book, The Art of Buying Art, she wanted a party that was both cozy and cool.

The result was a two-tiered loft and rooftop party on Thursday, June 14, at the Xchange that mixed velvet sofas and farmhouse tables with white ottomans and seaside chairs. "We wanted to make it an art space but also bring in Paige's world, so it felt more like her living quarters," said Matthew Robbins, the senior partner at Artfool who produced the event. "We didn't want it to feel too stuffy."Downstairs in the loft, lighting designer Ira Levy projected images of art from the book onto blank white walls, and Marcey Brownstein served comfort food such as grilled cheese sandwiches on aged wood tables. The drink was hibiscus-infused vodka.

Upstairs on the roof, guests grazed on a raw bar and ceviche served in short glasses while drinking blue mojitos and lounging on white ottomans. Levy used nearby water towers as a backdrop to project West's signature message, written in bold block letters: BUY ART.

The original plan was to display the book's cover on the water towers, but block letters made for a stronger statement of the night's theme.

The downstairs loft was meant to feel like author Paige West's home, with relic sofas, rugs, and inviting chairs. She wanted the atmosphere to feel comfortable and not stuffy.

Seaside decor in muted colors lent a surf-inspired feel to the upstairs rooftop. Luckily, the weather was beautiful.
