2014 Gala

May 9, 2013
As guests checked into the Robin Hood Foundation's gala at the Javits Center, each received a custom ID tag, which this year was styled after MetroCards as a nod to the evening's subway motif. The cards enabled attendees to use the IML devices at their tables to make anonymous donations.

Much like previous years, the organizers for the benefit constructed a gateway to mark the entrance to the cocktail space. The night's theme was illustrated through decorative elements such as an illuminated subway-style map and the type of green lampposts typically seen outside train entrances.

According to Sebastian, part of the Black Ball's original design had a tubular walkway leading into the reception area, where a blackboard-style wall displayed striking images of African women. A portion of this installation was placed in the cocktail space at the Apollo.

Held in Chicago on May 18, the ball had comic-book-inspired decor from Kehoe Designs. A cartoon-like, illuminated city skyline served as a fitting backdrop on the stage where comedian Martin Short performed. Crystalline centerpieces were meant to look like fallen kryptonite.

Nike's Nature Amplified: the Art and Science of Feeling
Nike's Nature Amplified: the Art and Science of Feeling

Nike erected a three-day installation in Gansevoort Plaza during Fashion Week to celebrate the launch of its Nike Free Hyperfeel running shoe. Produced by Aramique Krauthamer, founder of production company Odd Division, which specializes in interactive and immersive media, and Web and installation creator Jeff Crouse, the black-on-black temporary structure featured a tactile labyrinth comprising barefoot experiences that amplified nature. Three distinct physical spaces made up the labyrinth, which replicated common running surfaces like stone, sand, and grass. Equipped with neuro-headsets, visitors produced their own audiovisual installation—informed in real time by the brain's sensory reaction to the textures underfoot.

At Ply Gem’s 9,000-square-foot exhibit for the 2013 International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas, MG Design created a homelike booth that showed off hundreds of exterior building products and celebrated the brand’s 70-year history. The space also had a theater along with a two-story deck that housed a kitchen, private meeting space, and a fireplace.

At the Leopardo showcase, designed by Charlie Greene Studio, an embroidered needlepoint wall spelled out a sobering statistic: More than 35 million people are living with H.I.V. 'The Leopardo table was about recognizing the work that we still have to do. ... We wanted to remind people in a homey, handmade sort of way why they were at the event. The juxtaposition of the crafted delivery and the serious message made the message more unexpected and profound,' said designer Jason Hall.
