Now in its 18th year, the Miami edition of MiFo, formerly known as the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, has grown from a long weekend featuring a couple dozen films to a 10-day festival spotlighting more than 80 films from moviemakers in 28 countries, sponsored by companies including Celebrity Cruises, Gilead Sciences, and Showtime. This year, the Society of Professional Journalists’ Florida chapter will again partner with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists to honor top media practitioners in the print, broadcast, and online fields of journalism at the Firefighters Memorial Building in Miami. Next: July 9, 2016

This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Miami Beach festival, one of the best-known venues for Brazilian filmmakers to achieve cinematic fame outside their home country. Next: September 17-24, 2016

Organizers say the event—which now attracts 1,200 media professionals, actors, entertainers, and executives in technology, branding, and marketing—has been growing larger. This year’s event travels to Turnberry Isle in Miami for three days of education and networking. Next: October 5-7, 2016

The former Fort Lauderdale Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, rebranded last year under the MiFo umbrella along with its sister festival in Miami, sold a record-breaking 5,000 tickets for last year’s week-long festival. Next: October 7-16, 2016

More than 70 countries were represented at this year’s annual gathering at the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc Miami Beach resorts, and honorees at the awards ceremony included Family Feud host Steve Harvey and producer Quincy Jones. Next: January 17-19, 2017
