2. National Magazine Awards

The American Society of Magazine Editors, in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, hosts the annual Ellies, which honor excellence in magazine journalism. This year the program will include new awards for Social Media and Digital Innovation, as well as the presentation of the ASME Award for Fiction. The guest list is limited to 500 magazine industry professionals. Next: March 13, 2018

More than 20,000 people attend the annual event, which in 2017 featured appearances by Glenn Close, Rob Reiner, Jerry Seinfeld, Carl Bernstein, and rock climber Alex Honnold. Next: October 5-7, 2018

5. New York Women in Communications’ Matrix Awards

The Matrix Awards raise money to fund scholarships and educational programs for women. Katie Couric emceed the 2017 ceremony, which was hosted by Hearst Magazines and honored industry power players including Meryl Streep, Sheryl Sandberg, and Tina Fey. IPG will host in 2018. Next: April 23, 2018

In 2018, BookExpo America will shift its focus from a traditional trade show to a how-to conference on achieving success in the publishing business. The event will take place again at the Jacob K. Javits Center, drawing booksellers, publishers, agents, and others in the industry. Dave Eggers and Jacqueline Woodson are among the authors slated to appear. Next: May 30-June 1, 2018

Actress Rashida Jones hosted last year’s event, which included winners from HBO Entertainment, FX Networks, BBC One, Netflix, and CNN. The awards are from Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia but given at a ceremony in New York. Next: May 19, 2018
