Not all award shows leading up to the Oscars are black-tie imitations of the Big One. The second annual “Oscar Wilde: Honoring Irish Writing in Film” pre-Academy Awards party on Thursday was as casual as it was grand, with 400 guests braving a drizzly evening to salute honorees Van Morrison, Terry George, and The Departed screenwriter William Monahan, who went on to win an Oscar on Sunday. Morrison was the big draw, with revelers crowding the stage where the legendary Irish R&B singer launched his new CD, Van Morrison at the Movies, with a scheduled 45-minute performance that stretched into an hour. After the concert, guests had Alaskan salmon, seared lamb, homemade potato chips, and the Irish specialite de maison—Guinness ale—as well as Oronoco rum “Wilde mojitos.” The evening was hosted by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance and sponsored by Culture Ireland, Quinlan Private, and American Airlines. Levy, Pazanti & Associates produced the event, and Katy Sweet & Associates handled the PR.
