Ever get the feeling that there are gala awards ceremonies for almost everything these days? There are. And the fragrance industry is no different. The Fragrance Foundation celebrated its 28th annual FiFi Awards--known as the "Oscars of the fragrance world," of course--with the usual froufrou: red carpet, celebrities, paparazzi, a spectacular location and a gala dinner.
It was tough to keep the gowns and tuxes from getting sloshy on the rainy, cold summer night. But that didn't deter the famous and not-so-famous from showing up at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center for the fragrance industry's celebration, which was orchestrated with precision by Ted Inc.
Monica Lewinsky was there, and we heard that she was speculating about launching her own line of lipsticks. We also eyed awards presenters Joan Rivers and Brian Boitano on the red carpet. Other presenters included Michael Feinstein, Cheryl Tiegs, Alan Cumming, Daisy Fuentes, Montel Williams, Renee Fleming, Thomas Tirino, Florence Henderson, Scott Ellis and Roshumba.
After the awards presentation, the guests hiked to the Restaurant Associates tent behind Lincoln Center. The grand tent was decorated as a futuristic kaleidoscope to match the theme, "2000: The Scentury of Sensations," with far-out detail by the design team at Fiori. Plastic bubble tablecloths and multi-colored mobiles hanging from the top of the tent gave the room a rainbow feel. Spinning silver ornaments adorned the centers of the tables, colorful pulled fabric sectioned off the room, and planetary table numbers identified the scores of tables. The finishing touch was a huge metallic 2000 with "FiFi" written across it and brightened by colorful lights by Bentley Meeker Lighting & Staging.
