It wasn't the Grammys, the Tonys or the Oscars, but it was the premier awards show in the public relations business: the Silver Anvil awards. With 400 people attending from across the country, the awards presenter, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), chose the Equitable Center as the perfect venue for the number of people as well as the important and glamorous feeling that the event needed to convey.
The Equitable auditorium, the most intimate midtown auditorium space, hosted the fast-paced, hour-and-a-half ceremony. Before the awards show, the nominees were ushered backstage for a champagne reception amidst the stagehands and hubbub. While a little hot, the behind-the-scenes mystique was a great way for all nominees to feel like a part of the show. It was an interesting theatrical effect to see all the nominees enter the auditorium from the stage when the lights went down to begin the show.
Hosts Christopher Veronda of Eastman Kodak and Kathy Cripps of Hill & Knowlton kept a fast pace by avoiding speeches or long category introductions. The production quality of the event was first-rate. Karla Voth, director of special events and programs for PRSA, led a team who orchestrated the flawless event. Another great twist to the event was the post-ceremony buffet supper in the dramatic lobby, catered by Lyn Goldstein of Lyn's Cafe Caterers. It was a great way to avoid a formal and expensive sit-down dinner while feeding guests and allowing them to mingle.
