First he goes to the Oscars, now this: For the premiere party for Woody Allen's new film, Hollywood Ending, the quintessential New Yorker had some very tinseltown-friendly decor. Los Angeles-based event production company Silver Birches decorated the chic raw space Eyebeam Atelier with black and white blowups from the final scenes of some classic films. Judy Garland was waking up from her Technicolor dream of Oz. The Graduate's Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross were smiling nervously at the back of a bus. And Katharine Hepburn was choosing between Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart in The Philadelphia Story.
But the event's overall look was neither a throwback or color-free. Instead, Silver Birches' Peter Otero gave the party a striking, modern look that echoed the saturated shades of green, orange and yellow used in the movie's promotional poster. Otero, who came from L.A. to do the party, works frequently with Dreamworks, and he brought a warm, chic look to the very raw venue without covering its large walls of exposed brick.
In the venue's glass-enclosed entry area, lighting company Levy Lighting recreated the colorful grid pattern of the poster, which was inspired by the sidewalk handprints of Mann's Chinese Theater. Inside the party, tables in a variety of different sizes--high, small cocktail tables and larger dinner tables for six and eight--were arranged in clusters around the vast venue and covered with tablecloths that echoed the poster's colors. And the same palette was carried through the small centerpieces on the tables and in the roses placed inside large, dramatic arrangements of apple blossom branches by Tansey Design Associates. Levy's lighting scheme used similar colors to give the tables a warm glow, and the lighting on the bar areas faded through an assortment of colors to provide subtle changes in the room's look.
