On the Atlantic coast, the MTV Video Music Awards were heating up Miami. Meanwhile, on the Pacific coast, rental car firm Enterprise Fleet Services treated its employees to a South Beach-theme party that brought the glitter and flavors of South Beach to bear on at the Hilton Palm Springs Resort. Enterprise vice president Kevin Morrissey and his assistant, Liane Chong, worked with Los Angeles-based Bravo Productions to produce the affair.
At the ballroom entrance, guests passed beneath a pink Art Deco-style portico designed by Bravo; panels of stylized flamingos and tropical foliage flanked the doors. The tables and chairs were adorned in lime green, bright orange, hot pink, and aqua linens accented with white, and brightly colored lighting illuminated tall, sheer white organza columns. Neon pieces in the shape of flamingos, fish, and palm trees topped the tables as centerpieces, and neon signage of popular Miami nightclubs created a lively nighttime street feel. Neon palm trees decked the stage. A handpainted backdrop depicting South Beach’s Ocean Drive cityscape rounded out the decor.
The hotel’s chef developed a menu of Latin-inspired cuisine that included a jicama, red pepper, and roasted corn relish salad with mango yogurt dressing; jerk chicken breast with pineapple mango relish served over black-bean chili with Spanish rice; fried plantains and tropical chutney; and cheesecake with pina colada topping for dessert. Throughout the evening, a professional cigar roller made Cuban cigars throughout the evening and distributed them to guests.
