Cartier Red Pervades NBC Globes Party

Sponsorship from the luxury retailer dictated a tented space decked out in the brand’s signature color—and some of its finest vintage jewels.

January 16, 2007
All the glittery, million-dollar baubles at the Golden Globes weren’t just draped over the starlets on the red carpet. Some of them were also behind glass, in cases in the center of NBC Universal and Focus Features party space, thanks to sponsor Cartier. The luxury brand loaned vintage necklaces, bracelets, and tiaras from its Geneva vaults for the display, which beckoned guests’ attention—even in the 12,000-square-foot celebrity-filled tent—at the event, held in the parking lot atop the Beverly Hilton.During the awards, the hosts provided an intimate viewing party overseen by Hollace Davids for Universal, Carlotta Florio for Focus, Wendy Luckinbill for NBC, and Christine Goppel for Cartier, and produced by Angel City Designs. The 300 guests filled out special ballots with their predictions for the night’s award recipients; the winner received his and hers Cartier Roadster watches.

Later, the after-party in the same space swelled to include more guests—including those who’d come from attending the ceremony in the hotel’s international ballroom. Although the party hosts didn’t exactly clean up at the awards ceremony, we did spot among the guests Tina Fey and Donald Trump, whose name is on lots of Hollywood lips these days on account of some much-publicized mutual verbal abuse between him and Rosie O’Donnell. Models distributed red satin bracelets with gold buckles to guests at the gusty entry on the cold L.A. night. (Guests at the after-party hardly missed out on a meal: Sushi stations, raw bars, and dessert buffets were available.)

Vintage black and white photos of Hollywood icons—like Elizabeth Taylor (wearing the legendary 69.42-carat Burton-Taylor diamond), Grace Kelly (wearing a Cartier diamond necklace) and Gloria Swanson (with her rock crystal and diamond bangles from Sunset Boulevard)—surrounded by red lacquer frames hung around the tent. Cartier red touches pervaded the party—designed and produced by the Mark Yumkas-led team at Angel City this year as in the past—which also used several thousand yards of custom-sewn charcoal sateen fabric in the event’s design. Angel City decked private lounge areas around the perimeter with gray suede upholstered furniture groupings accented with red silk pillows, and hung Chinese silk string fabric panels in the center of the clear-roof tent to serve as dramatic chandeliers. Red lacquer floral containers held simple white roses. DJ Diallo spun a mix of disco to electronica to hip-hop for the crowd, which got rowdier as the night wore on, and matriculated in and out to the cluster of other parties in the Globes-commandeered hotel.
