On January 30, People magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation co-hosted their annual official Screen Actors Guild Awards Gala, immediately following the 22nd annual show at the Shrine Exposition Center. It was the 20th year that the entities have joined forces for the bash—but this year the event came with a notable change.
Given that the University of Southern California bought the East Lot—former home of the gala tent—this year’s party had to move to a new location. Its setup took over the stage at the Shrine Auditorium, which was extended out to accommodate. Lisa Simpson, special projects director for People, In Style and Entertainment Weekly, oversaw the event, working again with longtime partner Tony Schubert from Event Eleven.
This year’s theme borrowed, in a self-referential move, from Hollywood’s own history. “Glamour and elegance defined Hollywood in the early days of cinema,” Schubert said. “Films created the style that screen legends emulated.” To that end, guests found a party space that nodded to 1920s Hollywood. It was a similar vintage that influenced last year's Prohibition-inspired party, but this year's look was much more vibrant, and less subdued, than its 2015 counterpart.
Visual details included an entrance with theater-style marquee lighting and an interior decorated with gold-framed movie posters, red sofas, lush green palm trees, and deco-style chandeliers.
As the exclusive beauty sponsor of the SAG awards ceremony and gala, L’Oréal Paris was on site for makeup touch-ups and sampling. Dunkin’ Donuts was also the party’s exclusive coffee provider and served fresh-brewed java and Munchkins.
Attendees—including stars like Carol Burnett, Christina Hendricks, Demi Moore, Eddie Redmayne, Idris Elba, January Jones, Kevin Spacey, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tina Fey—picked up the party’s signature overstuffed gift bags assembled by Gift Bags by Rachael.
