Washington to Host Medical Conventions, Army Meeting

A slew of medical-related meetings and conventions are headed to the district this fall, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery's annual meeting, which kicks off today at the Washington Convention Center and runs through September 19. More than 10,000 specialists and exhibitors are expected to attend the AAO-HNS, generating roughly 27,000 room nights and $11.4 million in spending.

Also on tap in the coming weeks and months: the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics annual meeting for 13,000 heart specialists, taking place October 22 to 24; the American Academy of Periodontology's annual convention for 5,500, October 27 to 30; and the American Public Health Association's annual convention for 14,000, November 4 to 11.

Two big non-medical events occurring September 26 to 29 include the 17th annual Out & Equal Workplace Summit for 2,000 at the Hilton Washington and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual legislative conference for 5,000 (including Quincy Jones and Louis Gossett Jr.) at the convention center.

The biggest event this fall, however—judging by attendance numbers, at least—is the Association of the U.S. Army's annual meeting, which is expected to draw 20,000 attendees to the convention center October 7 to 10.
