The Post's Reliable Source is reporting today that the D.C. chapter of the NAACP had to cancel its Breaking Barriers gala, set to honor recently appointed House of Representatives clerk Lorraine Miller, due to House fund-raising rules. In February, Miller, NAACP chapter president since 2004, became the first African-American to hold the clerk position since its creation in 1789. Not surprisingly, the NAACP opted to honor Miller at this year's October 13 gala, but House ethics fund-raising rules "severely restrict [Miller's] ability to approach donors"—bringing the organization's money-raising efforts to a halt. (This year's goal was $150,000.)
Event organizers called off the gala in early October, marking the first cancellation in 60 years. Miller is promising to reschedule next spring.
