The Washington Convention Center Authority announced plans this week to rename the Washington Convention Center as the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, honoring the district's first elected mayor, Walter E. Washington. Though the D.C. Council approved the change late last year, the announcement didn't come until this week, and the official dedication will take place on November 5.
According to the Washington Business Journal, President Lyndon Johnson appointed Washington, a Howard University Law School graduate, as the first mayor-commission of D.C. in 1967. Washington was then elected mayor in 1975. He died in 2003, the same year the $850 million convention center opened.
