MIAMI—Making its debut at the end of June, Womanish, an interactive sensory art exhibit, aims to shed light on important issues such as the pink tax, the gender pay gap and mental health through photo-worthy rooms and exhibits.
Originally launched in Chicago after an unsuccessful digital/app trial during the COVID-19 pandemic, Womanish was founded by sisters Danyelle Gray and Dionna Gray and creative director Emily Dahlquist. The Miami event, which runs from June 30 to Aug. 29 at the Wynwood Art District, will feature 16 new rooms that each highlight a different experience related to womanhood.
“We have always had a passion for empowering women," said Dionna. "We decided to create a physical space with that same mission, hence, Womanish was born. It is a safe, empowering, fun place for women to connect! So while the app failed, it hurled us into what is now Womanish."
To design and bring each room's theme to life, the founders worked with artists from Instagram and Chicago-based production agency The Super Producers. Each of the 16 new rooms in Miami will feature an “ish” theme (think Censoredish, Childish, Fleurish, Consumerish, Vanish, Selfish and Moodyish, to name a few) meant to bring awareness to the struggles women face every day but in an Instagrammable, positive setting with colorful murals and fun props.
“Censoredish explores censorship of women's bodies; Fleurish is more of a celebration and is about giving women their flowers; and Consumerish talks about the high cost of purchasing items in relation to periods,” explains Danyelle.
As far as event safety measures go, the ticketed event will require non-vaccinated guests and all staff to wear masks, in addition to implementing cleaning protocols throughout the day and a deep clean at the end of each night.
