We recently asked a group of music-magazine event organizers for their favorite new bands. Now here's ours—er, mine: The Shalitas manage to mix '50s girl-group harmonies with soul influences and schoolyard-style hand claps. They're hip enough to win over a group of teenagers or twentysomethings, and they have enough of a retro vibe to please an older crowd. So book the Brooklyn-based band before they get big. "We're at a point where we'll play for just about anybody we can tolerate," jokes Kazual Shalita, who trades lead-vocal duties with Ahneeta and Lowlita.
You can give a listen on their MySpace page or—better yet—hear them live. They're scheduled to play at Club Europa in Greenpoint on Thursday and Bar Matchless (also in Greenpoint) on August 25.
