DC Shorts Film Festival Opens Tomorrow

Now in its fifth year, the DC Shorts Film Festival opens tomorrow and runs through September 18. Featuring 102 films (each lasting between 60 seconds and 23 minutes) from eight countries, six screenplays, and with 150 filmmakers in attendance, DC Shorts has been named by MovieMaker magazine as "one of the nation's leading short film festivals."

Planners of the DC Shorts Film Festival opted to put an emphasis on voting in this election year. In the weeks leading up to the event, fans could vote online for the best original song/music from a film, as well as for the bands they wanted to play at various parties during the festival. The movies screened during DC Shorts will be judged using a special phone-based ballot system that allows audiences to vote for the film of their choice. All film screenings will be held at Landmark's E Street Cinema.

Events taking place during the festival include tomorrow's opening-night party on the roof deck of Carroll Square; the invitation-only V.I.P. reception on Friday at the Gibson Guitar showroom; "Midnight Madness," an open event on Saturday at Bar Louie; and Sunday's award brunch at Clyde's of Gallery Place. Also on tap: Saturday's Arts-On-Foot, a free family film showcase presented by Target, and the September 18th "Best of the Fest" wrap-up party that will feature the works of award winners and audience favorites. Various seminars will also be held throughout the week.
